I love the rhythm and order of Bavarian twisted stitches. Patterns that appear complex develop quite logically, and lend themselves quite well to pattern memorization once established. This mitten offers a small variety of stitch patterns to try, perfect for learning this technique.

I used the original Erlbacher stitch dictionaries, purchased from Schloss Trautenfels, for the stitch patterns. You can now purchase these combined into one book from SchoolHouse Press.

This mitten is worked cuff up, in the round. The thumb gusset is anatomically correct, being slightly offset towards the palm. The increases are paired lifted increases; I’ve found that this particular increase gives a very tidy appearance with little to no gaping.

A tightly twisted multiple plied yarn works best to show the stitch details; the Black Water Abbey yarn is specifically milled to support designs such as twisted stitches and cables.

SIZE: To fit Men’s Sm/Med (Med/Lg) 8-8.5, (9-9.5)” hand circumference. For smaller circumference, choose yarn that gives a tighter gauge.

• Thumb length from side of mitten to tip of thumb:3.5(3.75)”

YARN: Black Water Abbey, 2 Ply Sportweight, 350 yds/4 oz skein, 100% wool. 1 skein Indigo. 230 (260) yds/ 2.7(3) oz for pair of mittens.

Needles: US 3/ 3.25 mm needles or size to obtain correct gauge. Your choice of circular needle(s) or DPNs.

GAUGE: 26 sts and 35 rows = 4”/ 10cm in St st.

NOTIONS: Tapestry needle, cable needle, three stitchmarkers.
