TWISTER SOCKS
One of my all-time favourite patterns to knit is a classic 2 x 2 rib. Its unfussy appearance, practical fit, and relaxing stitch pattern draw me in every time. The Twister Socks are based on this familiar pattern, but with a little “twist” down the fronts in the form of mirror image cables (no cable needle required). Ribs & Twists—comforting for the mind, engaging for the fingers—a perfect pairing for your next perfect pair.
YARN
1 ball of Footprints from Wool Addicts by Lang Yarns (45% Cotton, 42% Wool, 13% Nylon); 437 yds (400 m) / 100 g. Sample shown in colour 0006 “Paint Box”.
OR A similar fingering weight sock yarn in the following approximate amounts:
Small: 310 yds (285 m) to fit 7” (17.5 cm) foot.
Medium: 350 yds (320 m) to fit 8” (20.5 cm) foot.
Large: 390 yds (355 m) to fit 9” (23 cm) foot.
Note: Foot measurements are for the circumference of the ball of the foot measured around the widest part of the foot, at the base of the toes (ie. not the finished sock).
NEEDLES
US Size 1 (2.25 mm). Use your preferred technique & corresponding needle(s) for small-circumference knitting.
Adjust needle size if necessary to achieve required gauge.
GAUGE
34 stitches & 47 rounds = 4” (10 cm) in Stockinette Stitch, after blocking.
IMPORTANT
The Twister Socks are worked top-down (ie. from cuff to toe). Prior experience with sock knitting is recommended--the pattern is not written for a specific needle type. Use whichever technique & corresponding needle type(s) you prefer for small-circumference knitting.
The pattern on Sock #1 is the mirror image of the pattern on Sock #2, however the socks fit exactly the same, there is no “right” or “left” sock.
