Uchiwa Earrings
Introduction:
I have always been fascinated by different cultures of the world. One of those is the Japanese culture. I love the look of the dainty and delicate ladies adorned with a Kimono while holding a handmade paper fan.
I love it so much that I bought a few vintage Japanese fans. I later learnt that these fans are called “Uchiwa” in Japanese.
A couple of years ago, one of my good friends gifted me a golden colored metallic pendant which was an Uchiwa fan. She bought it on one of her trips to the far off lands.
It even opened and closed like a fan and had a cool Phoenix painting over the fan which was only visible when the fan opened. The bottom of the fan had delicate, golden metallic tassels. I have added pictures of that piece of loved jewelry closed and open with all its fine detailing.
I love it when 2 cultures meet. Here, I have taken the inspiration from this Uchiwa fan pendant and converted it into an Indian style statement earrings which looks like Jhumka. Jhumka is a style of large bell shaped earrings worn by women of India, Pakistan and Bangladesh.
I always knew I would be converting the Uchiwa pendant into a crochet jewelry someday. I did not make a pendant, I made it into a pair of earrings in 2018. Finally, I got around to writing its pattern.
Yay to Uchiwa! Now the entire world can enjoy my long ago loved memory.
