Umi is knitted from the bottom up, each piece separately.

The colour changes in the charts are worked using the intarsia technique, where the yarns are twisted together on the wrong side of the work.

The sleeve ribbing is knitted in the round, after which the work is divided, and the rest of the sleeve is knitted back and forth in intarsia according to the chart.

To shape the slightly sloping shoulders on the front and back, short rows are worked, and the shoulders are then joined using a 3-needle bind off.

Finally, stitches are picked up along the neckline, and the neckband is knitted in rib, folded over, and sewn to the wrong side.

To make assembly easier, the pieces are washed and laid out flat to dry, stretched to shape, before the side and sleeve seams are sewn together and the sleeves are set into the armholes.
