Underwood 25-02
When Pantone announced “Mocha Mousse” as their colour of the year for 2025, I knew I had the perfect yarn in my stash. “Roasting S’mores” from A Wanderer and Her Wool is a beautiful interpretation of this year’s warm brown colourway, and the Adventurer Sock base is a lovely, soft blend of merino wool, cashmere, and silk that is perfect for shawls. I designed a one-skein project, but you can make it larger if you have more yarn—see the Notes for advice on how to do that. This boomerang shawl is knit on the bias, with a double increase at the beginning of right-side rows and a single decrease at the beginning of wrong-side rows. The eyelet medallions are meant to represent marshmallows, sandwiched between layers of garter stitch “biscuits.” The design doesn’t have to be knit up in milk chocolate shades, though—the shawl would be just as pretty in your favourite colour!
The techniques you will need to know, or learn, to complete this project are:
- cast on;
- knit and purl;
- yo increase;
- kyok double increase;
- k2tog decrease;
- ssk decrease;
- cdd double decrease;
- lace bind-off (explained in pattern instructions).
Founded in 1856, Underwood originally had a general store and a post office, as well as a blacksmith, a harness shop, a sawmill, a grist mill, and a cheese factory. Today, it is part of the Municipality of Kincardine in Bruce County, with its own busy community centre.
