I was smitten by tiny pom-poms, can you blame me??

Upshot mittens make great use of a carry-along yarn by featuring it only on the back of the hands where it is most visible. Don’t have one ball of adorable pom-poms available? Try one of the Make It Tweed yarns, or add a bit of sparkle with a sequin yarn.

The cuff is worked in the round and then the hand is worked flat using a form of intarsia sometimes called “lazy tarsia” where the mini pom-poms are carried along just the back of the hand while the palm is worked plain with a gusset for the thumb. The top of the mittens are closed with a short three-needle bind off (link to tutorial in the pattern), leaving just a short side seam to finish. The thumb is then finished in the round.

Sized to fit older children to larger adults, Upshot Mittens fit a hand measured around knuckles of 6.5 (7, 7.5, 8, 8.5, 9) in/16.5 (18, 19, 20.5, 21.5, 23) cm in circumference.

Yarn Requirements, Main Colour (MC): Worsted weight wool or wool blend 85 (100, 120, 135, 160, 175) yd/78 (92, 110, 124, 146, 160) m.

Optional Accent Colour (AC) for a striped cuff: Worsted weight wool or wool blend 15 yd/14 m all sizes.

Contrast Carry-along (CC): Lace weight novelty or accent yarn 40 (45, 50, 55, 65, 75) yds/ 37 (42, 45, 50, 60, 70) m.

The dark pair are what I’ve decided are dressy evening mittens. They’re worked without stripes at the cuff and use a sequin carry-along yarn in place of the mini pompoms. Elegant!
