Upside Down Rainbow Hat Set
Featured knitting pattern for the 2026 Puget Sound LYS Tour for Stranded by the Sea, Edmonds, WA.
This simple ribbed hat and scarf set is designed with long gradient and self-striping yarns in mind. It is worked from the top down to free you from the guessing game of where in the color gradient to start decreasing for the crown to ensure your favorite color appears in the project.
The hat starts at the center top with increases made until the desired size is reached and then simply worked until you run out of yarn or reach the desired size. Use every little bit of those specially dyed skeins of yarn and be sure the favorite color is just where you want it!
This pattern includes options to finish the garment as a bonnet-style hood with decorative tassels or chin ties and a coordinating scarf. Simple stitches make this pattern great for even a beginner!
The name was inspired by the granddaughter of one of our favorite knitters – she asked her grandma to make her an Upside Down Rainbow Hat.
