Birds have always fascinated me. As a child I loved seeing the birds my parents fed behind the window in winter. I still remember how exited I was seeing a small owl in a tree behind the house, on a cold winter’s day.
At home here, one of the clear signs of spring is when I hear the soft pu-pu-pu in the air. It’s the hoopoe that, to me, is one the most beautiful birds I’ve ever seen. Its black and white wings, the warm beige body, the black and white crown on its head. The long, curved beak the bird uses for picking insects. In spring and summer, the bird often comes to our garden to forage in the grass.

Upupa wrap takes its inspiration from the hoopoe, its intricate
stitch patterns echoing the bird’s layered feathers and outstretched wings. A calmer body section offers moments of rest before the crown motif brings a final flourish to the center of the shawl.
If you want it all, this is for you: lace, bobbles, mosaic knitting, stockinette and garter stitch with continuous color changes!
