This design is based on one of the pieces found in the back of the Uyeasound shop in Unst, Shetland. The original piece has a separate, sew on, lace edging which was dyed with indigo after the lace was knitted. This original piece was wider and shorter, probably designed to be used as a tray cloth. The yarn in the original is handspun, a two ply yarn about the same thickness as used here. However it has been knitted on bigger needles, making a stitch repeat larger.

The patterns are typical of Shetland lace in the 1890s, and the yarn used is worsted spun, similar to that used for lace in the late Nineteenth and early Twentieth Centuries.

MATERIALS
15 (75) g Cobweb weight yarn
pair 2.75 mm (US 2) needles
one 4 mm (US 6) needle for casting on and off
stitch markers as desired
I used Jamieson and Smith 1 ply Supreme,
100% Shetland wool, 1/16 worsted spun, 438 yds/400 m per 25 g ball

SIZE
Table Scarf: 10½“ wide and 24” long after washing and blocking. 1 x 25 ball should give you a runner up to 40“ long
Stole: 15” wide and 72” long.
The length of both pieces is easily adjustable.

TENSION
28 st and 48 rows to 4” over centre pattern.
Tension is not critical, but will affect the final size and amount of yarn used

NOTE
This pattern can be made up in many yarns from cobweb to DK. The yarn and needles used will alter the width of the piece and the amount of yarn used.
