VALA PANTS
These pants are designed with the aim of harnessing the unique quality of silk to reproduce and reflect light. We have played with a relief pattern in knit and purl stitches that emerges depending on how the light falls on the hand-knitted surface.
CONSTRUCTION
The pants are worked in two pieces from the top down in a pattern of knit and purl stitches.
First, the right piece is worked back and forth with short row shaping at the waist and increases to shape the hip and later the crotch.
The piece is then joined for working the leg in the round. The leg is finished with an i-cord cast-off worked around a crocheted drawstring which can be used to draw in the fabric at the ankles.
The left piece is worked to mirror the right piece. The two pieces are then sewn together along the crotch. Finally, stitches are picked up along the upper edge for the waistband, which is then knitted in the round, folded over, sewn to the wrong side, and provided with a wide elastic band.

Stitch markers
Stitch holders
3 cm 1.25 in wide elastic band for the waist, approx. 3 cm 1.25 in longer than waist circumference
TENSION
In knit and purl stitch pattern using 3 mm US 2.5 needles
10 cm 4 in = 25 sts
10 cm 4 in = 38 rows
The tension is measured after washing. Note that the silk will grow up to 10% in both length and width when washed. Therefore, the knitted piece will appear smaller while on the needles than the finished result after washing.
