Vallombrosa (pronounced Vall-om-broh-sah) is a beautiful shaded forest in Tuscany, Italy. The different lace stitch patterns used in the cowl echo the tree trunks, the sunlight streaming between them, and the forest foliage.

The Vallombrosa Cowl is a beautiful, delicate cowl. It is a quick and engaging knit worked in the round and each size given is achievable with just one 100 g skein of sock yarn (most of them use less!) making it an excellent stash buster.

Small: 22 cm / 8½” tall and 67 cm / 26½” in circumference
Medium: 22 cm / 8½” tall and 89 cm / 35” in circumference
Large: 22 cm / 8½” tall and 112 cm / 44” in circumference

The size is however highly customizable and details are given for how you can really tailor the cowl to your wishes.

Sample shown in the Forbidden Forest (green) colourway is in size Small

3.5 mm / US 4 circular needle. The cable length depends on the size you are making. Pick a length at least 5 cm / 2” shorter than your circumference. N.B: A longer cable and the magic loop technique could be used.
Stitch markers 15 (20, 25) – see Pattern Notes for details

Other fingering weight yarns which are offered by Norah George would also work well.

Gauge is not totally critical in the pattern, but bear in mind that differences will result in different yarn usage.
