Vanilla-on-the-Side Hat
This is a basic sideways short row hat designed by request for an Arizona based charity organization, Stitches of Love, for their back-to-school charity drive. It was created specifically for the large (5/8”) or regular (1/2”) gauge knitting loom; however, it can easily be adapted for other size looms and/or knitting needles. The pattern is written for a medium size (20 in head circumference) with 2 in of negative ease, but can be adjusted by increasing/decreasing the number of cast stitches and/or wedges. For sideways hats, the number of cast on stitches impact the height of the hat and the number of rows or wedges impact the width. Please do a gauge swatch with the loom/yarn you will be using and adjust the pattern accordingly.
For a professional look, I strongly recommend using a provisional cast on/bind off and seaming using the Kitchener stitch method. I use the method shown in this video by Nancy Wynn: How to do a seam off of waste yarn
