Experience Level: Advanced Beginner

Inspiration strikes anytime! One of my students wore a tee shirt to class with a deep v-neck and stripes that followed the neckline down the shirt. I happened to go yarn shopping that day and couldn’t get the lines of the stripes and “V” out of my head. After fiddling with a little geometry, the VI Shawl was born! This shawl is a deep shawl that is made of two symmetrical isosceles triangles. Instead of the shawl standard (two adjoining 90 degree angles at the top of the shawl which form a straight line across the top), this shawl is made up of two adjoining 120 degree angles at the top, which create a boomerang shape. Because of this shape, this shawl drapes nicely over the shoulders and can be worn with the center point in front, back or on the side. Folding back the top edges also creates a shoulder shawlette that can be tied neatly in the front.

Construction Details
The VI Shawl is worked from the bottom edge towards the center top with stripes and dramatic decreases to make the shape stand out.

Finished Measurements
24” depth, 48” span across the top, 80” span across the bottom two edges.

Yarn
Sport weight (CYCA #2) or a light DK weight yarn in at least two colors. 300 yards main color and 275 yards contrast color. To determine yardage necessary for multiple contrast colors, divide the 275 yards by the number of contrast colors you will be using.

Gauge
19 stitches and 27 rows = 4” in stockinette stitch using larger size needles.

Needles
US 7 (4.5mm) 40” circular needle for the body and a US 6 (4mm) 40” circular needle for the edgings. Adjust needle size as necessary to obtain correct gauge.

Other Materials
Lock-ring stitch marker, tapestry needle.
