Original version comes from The Practical Companion to the Work Table, Containing Selections for Knitting, Netting and Crochet Work by Elizabeth Jackson (1846).

The original version began with 150 sts. I am beginning my modern version with 86 sts. This enables me to make socks that fit an adult woman using size 1 needles at a gauge of 7 sts per inch. I’ve also made a few other minor tweaks to the pattern for a better fit than the original. The sock is the same basic design as the original but reworked for modern sock yarn.
