Ward Lake is a year-round recreational area for Ketchikan. During the summer, it provides trails with unsurpassed scenery and quaint picnic spots. During winter, the lake can freeze over to become a community ice rink. Those cool weather outings are made all the nicer for the covered gathering areas that sport a fire place for a cozy place to warm hands and visit. And, throughout the seasons, the lake is home to all manner of wildlife including families of Trumpeter Swans.

Three different motifs make up this shawl: the bordering “leaf” motif is the beginning of the vine-like cast-on; the center “water” lace is contains diamonds of rippling water; and the final lace bind-off represents the “feathers” of the Trumpeter Swan, a memorable Ward Lake resident.

Instructions are provided in both charts and row-by-row written instructions.

The construction begins as intarsia with a leaf border on both sides of the center diamond lace. Once the center lace section is complete, the left (right side of fabric facing) leaf border uses short rows to turn the leaf. It then travels sideways across the bottom of the center lace section, moving one stitch from the end of the lace section to the bottom. When it reaches the opposite side, it uses short rows to connect to the right leaf border. The lace border is then across the last row created by the leaf border.
