Water St. Cardigan
The Water St. light sweater is perfect for when you need just a bit of soft knitted layering. Uses heavy fingering weight or sport weight at a loose gauge for elegance and comfort.
The small city of Peterborough, Ontario, is where I spent my years as an undergraduate student. When I returned a decade later for a year-long stint as a teaching Professor, I was pleased to discover that a yarn shop (Needles in the Hay) had opened downtown on Water Street. I spent many enjoyable afternoons knitting there, and made several wonderful friends amongst the knitters in town.
The Water Street cardigan is simple to knit and effortless to wear. Sleeves and body are each worked separately and then joined for a raglan yoke, with a few garter ridges added for extra texture at cuffs and upper torso. Worked with Tanis Fiber Arts Purple Label Cashmere Sock (or your preferred heavy fingering weight wool or wool-cashmere blend yarn) at a loose gauge of 5 sts/inch, this cardi is perfect for the transitional times of year, or any time you need some light knitted comfort.
If your preferred fingering weight yarn produces too tight a gauge, consider a sport-weight substitute, or adjusting your chosen pattern size.
