Watermelon Slice Applique
A free version is also available.
Learn how to crochet a Watermelon Slice Applique with this free crochet pattern. Appliques are great projects for yarn scraps and it’s so easy to change up the size by simply changing the yarn size and hook.
What can you do with an applique? Sew it onto a granny square, garment or beanie, glue it onto the front of a card, starch it to create a pendant for a necklace or earring, make a bunch and string them together as a garland… Just to name a few.
Materials:
- Small Amount of Worsted Weight Yarn – I used WeCrochet Dishie in White, Fiesta Red, Black and Jalapeno
- H8/5mm Crochet Hook
- Tapestry Needle
- Optional, Jewelry Pliers
Material Notes:
For 100% cotton yarn, I love using Circulo Natural Cotton Maxcolor 4/6, WeCrochet Dishie and Queensland Coastal Cotton because they’re colorfast, which means the colors are set so I don’t have to worry about the colors fading or bleeding when using or washing the project, but as an applique, you can reach for any fiber yarn that matches your project, and you can also use any weight yarn with the respective crochet hook to achieve different sizes of the applique.
Because it jumps from the seed row to the row of white and doesn’t have an extra row of red in between, as is the applique works best visually in worsted weight #4, chunky weight #5 and super chunky weight #6 yarns. If you’d like to use a lighter weight yarn, I recommend adding an additional row to the pattern after row 3 in solid red across.
Weaving in ends of a tough yarn, like cotton yarn, can be hard on the fingers. Sore thumbs and frustration can be a thing of the past by simply using jewelry pliers to carefully help pull the tapestry needle through the work.
Time Spent:
This applique took me just under 20 minutes to complete.
Measurements:
4 1/8″ Wide by 2 3/8″ Tall (2 1/2″ if you edge the top)
Abbreviations:
- HDC - Half Double Crochet
- DC - Double Crochet
- SC - Single Crochet
