Weldon's Coral Stitch Pattern
This easy and attractive lace is from ca. 1890 Weldon’s Practical Needlework, vol. 3, p. 4. Weldon used this stitch for a square shawl. There are only 6 pattern rows and all 3 wrong-side rows are “purl across”! The pattern is a multiple of 6 stitches + 1 extra stitch. Weldon added 4 more stitches for a narrow garter stitch edge on either side. Feel free to omit the 4 edge stitches, if preferred.
The 35-stitch swatch is 4.25 inches wide at gauge.
Skills needed: cast on, knit, purl, YO, k2tog, SSK, SK2P and bind off in knit stitch.
Gauge is not important in this pattern. Any block-able yarn/thread will work. Make a swatch to check gauge and appearance.
70 yards of #10 crochet thread will make 10 inches of a 35-stitch-wide strip at gauge.
