This reversible edging is from ca. 1888 Weldon’s Practical Needlework, vol. 1, p.6. Starting with just 9 stitches, it has a 4-row repeat after 2 set-up rows. This border was intended for a “spotted” (trinity-stitch) shawl but you can use it for anything you like! This border works best on a curve and is 1.4 inches at its widest at gauge.

Skills needed: cast on, slip, knit, purl, YO, YO twice, k2tog and bind off in knit stitch.

Gauge is not important in this pattern. Any block-able yarn/thread will work. Make a swatch to check gauge and appearance.

22 yards of #10 crochet thread will make 10 inches of this border at gauge.
