I love a simple chevron pattern (you might have spotted that in a few of my other accessory designs!). It’s amazing how just one row can create such a striking texture – and when you pair it with a self-striping yarn, it ends up looking far more complicated than it actually is. That’s the magic of good design and good yarn working together!

These socks are perfect for showing off your favourite 4 ply yarns. The WYS Signature 4 Ply gives a neat, tidy finish that stays up nicely around your ankle, while something like Manos Alegria adds a gentle slouch for that cosy, relaxed feel. I love a slouchy sock – there’s something so comforting about them ruffling down just so.

I called these socks Weston because the chevron ridges remind me of the ripple marks the sea leaves in the sand – the sort you find when the tide’s gone out. It took me right back to childhood visits to Weston-super-Mare, where the beach seems to stretch out forever once the sea has disappeared over the horizon.

They’re a lovely mindful knit, with a rhythmic repeat that makes you want to just keep going – and before you know it, you’ve finished one and cast on the second!

CONSTRUCTION
Knitted on double pointed needles in the round in one piece from the cuff down.

TECHNIQUES USED
Cast on, knit, purl, double pointed needles, in the round, simple lace, decreasing, grafting stitches together. Optional but recommended to create the feeling of joy when joining your stitches: three needle cast off.

YARN
One 100g ball of WYS Signature 4 ply.
75% Wool (contains 35% British BlueFaced Leicester) & 25% Nylon, 400m/437yds per 100g
The socks knitted for a UK size 5 took 60g/240m.

SUGGESTED KNITTING NEEDLES
2.5mm set of four double pointed needles

GAUGE (tension)
28 stitches and 38 rows to 10cm square over stocking stitch. I obtained this gauge with 2.5mm needles.
It is important to obtain gauge so do swatch and change your needle size to achieve the correct gauge if you need to.

SIZE
To fit UK size 5 or desired foot length as highlighted in the pattern.
