The price shown on Ravelry is the “true” value of the pattern that best reflects the work put into creating this design.

To purchase the pattern at a price point that is more accessible to you, use the coupon code at checkout listed next to the price point. The prices indicate the price you will pay, not the discount amount. No coupon code is needed for the highest price point.

The Whiria Cowl is based off the song “Whiria Te Tāngata” written by Iraia and Hone Bailey specifically for my wānanga group that would meet up once a month inTokyo.Translated into English, it loosely means “Weave the people together”. Like many Māori proverbs and songs, such lines are packed full of meaning and contain many interpretations.

This song is close to my heart as it was one of the first songs in Te Reo that I learned and the first song I was able to perform with my group at Waitangi Day at the Tokyo Embassy. I was inspired to create a design around this song and I worked closely with my mentor Hone, to ensure that the final design best represented his vision of the song and was something we could both be happy with.

The Whiria Cowl draws influence from one of the lines,“Ko te aka kūmara, he tāngata” (Like the kumara vine, so are the people) represented by the staggering of the twisted stitches in the middle and the intertwining of the cable stitches on the edges.
