Whirlybird
December 17, 2017: the pattern has been updated to correct some small errors, particularly in the 18-24 month size, that a sharp-eyed knitter picked up.
Stripes in all directions! This top-down baby sweater starts with a cheerful stripy garter-stitch yoke (with buttons, so it’s easy to get over the head), then switches to vertical stripes worked in two-color brioche rib for the sleeves and body.
Worked flat until the button placket is complete, then in the round, there is no finishing to do save casting off at the waist and cuffs, and stitching on the buttons.
Brioche stitch is just perfect for baby garments, It’s one of the stretchiest stitches there is, so your finished garments fit just that little bit longer.
A Note on Yarn
The sample was worked in Jill Draper Makes Stuff Rockwell, which is a DK weight that blooms when washed. I found it to be more like a light worsted yarn than a true DK, so bear that and the gauge in mind when choosing yarn for your project.
