Whisky Tumbler
This design was inspired by the “Barrel Aged” colourway from ÁLAINN YARNS, and is meant to evoke the patterns on the lead crystal or cut-glass tumblers in which barrel aged whisky would be served. The Memento base is a blend of Bluefaced Leicester wool and silk, and is absolutely delightful to work with—smooth, with a silky drape, as well as some bounce and memory for good stitch definition.
The small scarf is a one-skein project worked in DK weight yarn; the wrap is larger and finer, worked with three skeins of fingering. The design is a study in tension, as both projects were worked on 4.0 mm US 6} needles. Note that while row gauge differs, the stitch gauge is the same in both projects. The DK yarn creates a sturdier fabric for the scarf; the wrap in fingering weight is more ethereal.
Knit from one end to the other, the project is a simple rectangle. Repeating the first two stitch patterns with a half drop after the eyelet-striped central section makes the design symmetrical. Garter stitch on all edges stabilizes the sides of the piece.
The techniques you will need to know--or learn--to complete this project are:
- cast on and bind off;
- knit and purl;
- yo increase;
- k2tog decrease;
- ssk decrease;
- cdd double decrease.
