Whitecaps Shawl
Whitecaps takes its inspiration from ocean waves and the meandering stitches found in traditional Estonian lace. Embellished with optional beads or nupps, the graceful shapes of this lace pattern produce a modern, almost abstract interpretation of flowing water.
This generously-sized shawl is worked from end to end, without the need for grafting or a provisional cast on. All of the lace patterning is worked on the right side of the project, and the placement of the beads or nupps is charted (CHART ONLY). Two options are included: A with wider wave-shaped edging (shown), and B with simple narrow edging. Thanks to the simple construction, the size of this shawl can be easily customized just by casting on a different number of pattern repeats and/or working to a longer or shorter length.
Beads or nupps can be used to embellish as many or as few of the pattern repeats as desired (each beaded pattern repeat requires 12 beads for total of 204 beads per full length of the shawl). For example, beads or nupps can be added only to the two repeats along the edges of the shawl (408 6/0 4.0mm seed beads as shown), or to all of the repeats (1224 beads for all six repeats). The embellishments are optional and the pattern can be worked without them.
