Wick Leaf Gansey
by Gordon Reid
For this handsome design, Gordon Reid has transcribed a stitch pattern from a photograph of a gansey, dated 1896, in the Johnston Collection of glass plate negatives held by the Wick Society in Wick, north-east Scotland. The gansey is constructed in the traditional way; the body is knitted in the round to the armholes, then the front and back are worked separately. The shoulders are joined using a three-needle cast-off, and then stitches are picked up around the armholes to knit the sleeves downwards to the cuffs.
