From the Chapter Description: Color patterns of this type tend to be small, with comparatively few stitches and rows to each repeat; so they are easily learned by novice knitters. Beginners are usually delighted by the dazzling fabrics that can be easily obtained with color patterns. Before using such patterns in a garment, however, the knitter is cautioned to make test swatches and check their gauge carefully. The fabrics are inclined to be dense, requiring more stitches for each inch of width than an average stockinette-type pattern would need.
