Windermere Shawl
Like basically every other human on the face of the planet, I listened to Taylor Swift’s folklore album reverently through the thick of the pandemic in 2020. It was an escape, a salvation… It gave me the shivers that I imagine Taylor felt while overlooking Windermere Lake, sensing the tears from the poets who escaped there before her… the Elm trees towering above and throwing more shade than a Kardashian.
The Windermere Shawl is a “semi-circular”/half-hexagon piece featuring lace stitches reminiscent of falling Elm tree leaves, a small section of strategic traveling stitches that embody the famous peaks, and a delicate picot bind off. Simple lace techniques and basic increases come together to create a stunning shawl that is perfect for wrapping around your shoulders on a walk along The Lakes on a summer evening.
Worked top-down and beginning with a garter tab cast on (and with a starting stitch count of 13, obviously…), increases are worked every other row to create a traditional half-hexagon “semi-circular” shawl. Three wedges of lace are divided by two spines of stockinette, with a classic selvedge stitch edge border along the top.
Lacework instructions provided are both written and charted.
Suitable for Intermediate Knitters! (OR for the adventurous beginner! Lacework is all completed on the RS, meaning that all wrong side rows are purled across, making it a great choice for your first lace project!)
