Winter Wonderland Cowl
Errata Note: Set up Row 2 should read:
Set up Row 2: Using colour B, sl1wyif, brk, sl1yok; repeat from to last two stitches, brk, sl1.
Inspired by walks through the beautiful snowy countryside, this cowl makes the most of lush and squishy Big Squeeze bulky merino and soft and feathery Suri Alpaca Boucle Lux. These yarns together are like a drift of fluffy snowflakes (only much warmer) and together in this enchanting cowl they create a Winter Wonderland!
This cowl features a contrast in both colours and textures, bringing two very different yarns together with the magic of brioche stitch to create a fabric that is gorgeous on both sides. Worked back and forth in rows and then joined together with your choice of seaming or a 3-needle cast-off, the Winter Wonderland Cowl will keep you warm and stylish while you walk through your own winter wonderland.
Cowl measures 50” / 127 cm around and 10” / 26 cm wide.
Yarn:
Ancient Arts Fibre Crafts Suri Alpaca Boucle Lux 92% Super Fine Suri Alpaca / 8% Nylon 100 gram / 160 m (3.5 oz / 175 yd), 1 skein (Colour A), shown in Opal
Ancient Arts Fibre Crafts Big Squeeze 100% Superwash Merino Big Squeeze Bulky 100 gram / 116 m (3.5 oz / 127 yd), 1 skein, (Colour B), shown in Pieces of Eight
Substitution notes: You can substitute any fingering, sport, or DK weight yarn for the boucle yarn; part of the fun of this pattern is trying out different weights of yarns and textures of yarns to enjoy the effect! Another great boucle yarn to try is:
Bunny Hug - Boucle Sport
44% Extra Fine Merino / 17% Super Kid Mohair / 13% Angora / 26% Nylon
300 meters / 330 yards per 100 gram / 3.5 oz skein
Needles: 4.5 mm / US 7 circular needles
Notions:Tapestry needle, Stitch marker, 4.5 mm / US 7 crochet hook if working provisional cast-on, waste yarn for provisional cast on if working 3-needle cast-off, additional 4.5 mm needle if working 3-needle cast-off.
-This cowl uses an alpaca boucle yarn but should you prefer any yarn can be substituted for this boucle. To keep the effect of the boucle use a yarn that is less than bulky in weight and textured. Otherwise any yarn that is less than bulky in weight will work well and provide an interesting stitch contrast!
-Joining the cowl is done in the original sample via a provisional cast on and a three needle bind off, but you could also join the cowl by grafting, or by seaming the cowl together (e.g. with mattress stitch).
