The geometric tiles used in architecture across southern Spain, North Africa and the Middle East brought to mind this design which is popular with quilters too and worked up easily with short rows in knitted garter stitch making use of this stitch’s regular proportions and the simplicity with which short rows can be worked.

The cowl continues the modular design of the square itself, featuring: an eyelet panel between each square that allows for a ribbon to be laced through if desired; a neat border to finish the top; and the option of finishing the bottom with a matching border or a yoke to keep the upper chest and shoulders warm too.

Size adjustments have been provided for the short cowl and the design works well with extra blocks as a long infinity type cowl or a scarf too.

Sizes: one size, designed to fit easily over an adult head with comfortable ease at the neck. Tips are provided to increase or reduce by 2.5 cm / 1”.

Tension: 21 sts x 42 rows = 10cm/4” measured over garter stitch, using 2.5 mm needles, after blocking.

Working method: three square blocks are worked in modular fashion, i.e. by picking up and knitting stitches, with an extension on one side. Pieces are seamed and edged at top with a border and at bottom with a yoke or second border.
