These socks came about many years ago, when I decided to write a pattern as part of a competition. At the time, everything about designing it was difficult, as is a chess game – hence the name, as it matches the patterning so perfectly.

Finished Size: S (M, L) 7” (8”, 9” around), unstretched
Yarn: Yankee Dyer Yankee Sole II, 80% SW Merino/20% Nylon, 400 yards/100g (Sample knit in Northern Lights).

Needles: Set of 5 double-pointed needles or two circular needles size 2 US (2.75 mm), or size to obtain gauge

Gauge: 8 stitches per inch in stockinette, knit in the round.
