“Wohin?” (“Where to?”) is the second song in Franz Schubert’s cycle “Die schöne Müllerin” (Op. 25, D. 795),
where a young miller fatefully comes across a brook, and is captivated into following it.
Through-composed, the piano imitates the brook with a rippling pattern. The intimate connection between the words and musical character is what makes Schubert’s artistic songs or “lieder” unique - unmatched by previous composers, and not many since.

“Is this my path then? Oh tell me, brook, where to?
You have with all your rushing bewitched me through and through.
Why do I speak of rushing? It is not like that sound:
Perhaps the nymphs are singing and dancing on your ground.”

The design on these socks could be ripples formed by the pebbles in the brook or sparkling scales on the water nymphs’ tails
– at least there’s no doubt where this pattern will lead to: a nice, warm pair of socks.
