This jumper is inspired by my absolute love of fisherman’s gansays. The history behind them – why they were made and who they were made for – captures everything I believe knitting should be: a personal, hand-knitted garment that keeps the wearer warm, dry and wrapped in love while they work hard.

While this design is inspired by traditional gansays, it’s not knitted in the traditional way. It’s worked in my aran weight yarn and in flat pieces that are then joined together.

CONSTRUCTION
The back, front and two sleeves are knitted flat from the bottom up in separate pieces and joined together. The sleeves are drop. The neck edge is picked up and knitted.

TECHNIQUES USED
Cast on, knit, purl, simple cable, decreasing, increasing, cast off. Optional but recommended to create the feeling of joy when joining your pieces: mattress stitch seaming and three needle cast off.

YARN
8(9) 100g hanks of P &J Yorkshire Yarn Bluefaced Leicester Aran.
100% British Bluefaced Leicester wool, 175m/191yds per 100g

SUGGESTED KNITTING NEEDLES
4.5mm and 5mm.
Cable needle (this is optional as I don’t use a cable needle to do these cables).

GAUGE (tension)
18 stitches and 24 rows to 10cm/4ins square over stocking stitch. I obtained this gauge with 5mm needles.
It is important to obtain gauge so do swatch and change your needle size to achieve the correct gauge if you need to.
