Working yarnovers with a decrease is a basic knitting skill, but it creates a fantastic effect when you use it all over a sock! The diagonal lines which wrap around and around this fun and easy pair of socks look more complex than they actually are to execute.

Skills required

  • knitting
  • purling
  • yarnovers
  • decreasing
  • short rows
  • grafting
  • long-tail cast-on, or other cast-on method that is fairly stretchy and which looks good from the right side when you immediately join in the round after casting on

Size information

Diagonal pattern is quite stretchy and sock will expand to fit a range of foot measurements. Finished measurements are therefore quite variable. To fit adult-size feet/ankle girths up to about:

  • small: 8.5” (21.5cm)
  • large: 9.5” (24cm)

Yarn requirements

Sample shown is size large and took 271.3 yards. Recommended yardage:

  • small: 225 yards
  • large: 300 yards

Other materials needed

  • three stitch markers: one to mark beginning of rounds, plus two more
  • tapestry needle for weaving in ends
  • (optional) stitch holder or 8”-long spare length of yarn in similar weight to main yarn
