This hat resulted from my self-imposed challenge to design a “different” ribbed beanie. I loved playing with the twisted stitch ribbing to make it integrate neatly into both the brim and the crown shaping of the hat. As a bonus, the pattern is written for both worsted- and bulky-weight yarns.

SIZES Designed to be worn with about 2 in / 5cm of negative ease. Bulky Weight Version To fit head circ 18 (20, 22, 24) in / 45.5 (51, 56, 61) cm. Finished circ: 16 (17 ¾, 19 ½, 21 ¼) in / 40 (44.5, 49, 53.5) cm. Shown in second size.
Worsted Weight Version
To fit head circ 18 (19 ½, 21, 22, 24) in / 45.5 (49.5, 53.5, 56, 61) cm.
Finished circ: 16 (17 ½, 19, 20 ¼, 21 ¾) in / 40 (43.5, 47.5, 51, 54.5) cm. Shown in first size.

YARN Bulky Weight – Lorna’s Lace Shepherd Bulky (100% superwash merino wool; 114 g / 140 yds / 128 m), colour Brick; 1 skein. Substitute with approx 140 yds / 128m of bulky weight yarn. Worsted Weight – Lorna’s Laces Shepherd Worsted (100% superwash merino wool; 114 g / 225 yds / 206 m), colour Cedar; 1 skein. Substitute with approx 225 yds / 206 m of worsted weight yarn.

GAUGE Bulky Weight – 18 sts and 23 rnds = 4 in / 10 cm in rib pattern, blocked, measured slightly stretched.
Worsted Weight – 22 sts and 30 rnds = 4 in / 10 cm in rib pattern, blocked, measured slightly stretched.
- NEEDLES Bulky Weight – 6 mm (US 10) set of double pointed needles. Adjust needle size as necessary to obtain the correct gauge.
Worsted Weight – 4.5 mm (US 7) set of double pointed needles.
