I loved the crossed stitch I used in the yoke of my Media Tee and Media Shawl. Here, in the Wynnefield Shawl, I’ve tweaked the stitch pattern from garter stitch in between the bands of crosses to Stockinette stitch. Quite a difference a little change makes!

Starting with a few stitches, the Wynnefield Shawl grows into an asymmetrical triangle (my favorite shawl shape). Bands of Stockinette stitch alternate with a crossed open work stitch, offset by slipped stitch texture. A swath of garter ribbing at the end is neatly finished with an I-cord bind off.

The finished measurements are a wingspan of 52”, a base of 25.5”, and a center back depth of 21.5”. These measurements are taken after blocking and may vary depending on how vigorously you block the shawl.

YARN
Fingering weight yarn: approx. 305 yds of Color A and approx. 210 yards of Color B.
Sample shown is worked in Mondim by Retrosaria Rosa Pomar, 100% Portuguese wool, 384 m (421 yds)/100 g (3.5 oz), #115 (Color A: Gold); #305 (Color B: Green).

NEEDLES
US size 6 (4.0 mm) 32” needle (suggested), or size needed to obtain gauge.
The shawl is worked flat; the long needle is to accommodate the larger number of stitches.

GAUGE
In Stockinette stitch worked flat, 20 sts and 24 rows = 4” after blocking.
Exact guage is not crucial. Use a needle size that gives you a fabric that you like, but be aware that a change in gauge can affect the amount of yarn used and the size of the finished shawl.
