Xale Drago
A textured kerchief-style shawl worked from tip to tip using two stitch patterns from Barbara Walker’s Treasuries. The Slip-Coin cables on each edge and the Honeycomb Lace look like treasured coins surrounding a scaly dragon. It was designed with hand painted skeins of sock yarn in mind, although solid colours are very striking in the textured pattern.
The sections of the shawl are worked according to percentage of yarn rather than specific yardages, ie. increasing uses 45% of the yarn, centre even section uses 10% and the decreasing uses the remaining 45%. It is possible to knit this pattern using any weight of yarn, just choose a needle one or two sizes larger than recommended on the ball band.
Weigh your yarn ball first to get accurate amounts needed.
Sample Details:
Yarn: Cascade Heritage Silk, 437 yds (400m), 100 grams (Fingering weight)
Needle: US 6 (4.0mm), 24-32” circ; or size needed for desired fabric
Gauge: Not critical. Sample uses 64 sts in stockinette per meter using fingering weight yarn and US 6 needle.
(Cast on 10 sts. Measure 1 metre of yarn and mark with tied string or a pen. Knit flat in stockinette, counting sts until reaching the mark)
Finished size: Determined by your yarn and needle choices.
Errata:
May 20, 2015, Chart C row 7: chart and written instructions should be “k7, p2, (yo twice, k2) to m, p2, k7.”
May 10, 2014, Chart D is now updated to show correct rate of decreasing.
Errata: April 29, 2015, Correction: the abbreviation “1-4 rc” and “1-4 lc” should read “1-3 rc” and “1-3 lc”. The chart shows the correct action: 1 slipped st moves right/left over 3 knit stitches.
