When my son needed an outfit for his Anglo Saxons and Vikings history day at school, I took inspiration from the Skjoldehamn costume, a well-preserved outfit from the Early Middle Ages, found in marshy land in Northern Norway.
As I sewed the hood pieces together, I realised that it would be a wonderful garment to make use of large crocheted squares and thought how warm and comforting it would feel.
This pattern was originally designed for the Once Upon a Make-along Medieval fairytale event, which seemed the perfect opportunity to revive that idea and create a block with floral features, making a hood that’s ideal to keep a woodland fairy princess warm as she travels through her tale to our time. Following the event, this pattern is now available as an individual file.
Sizes: child S, child L, adult designed with positive ease in mind. Note that child L has a proportionately deeper yoke than the other two.
Tension: 30cm/12” square block has 25 rows and 136 sts; 4 2chsp in outer round, after blocking.
Working method: blocks are worked in joined rounds from RS. Pieces are seamed and edged.
