The texture is produced just with knit and purl stitches.

I find counting as you knit (especially in the round) even more relaxing than just garter or stockinette.

There is a sizing table for fingering - aran weights; small or large single loop (either size can be doubled).

Small loop: allow at least 150m (165 yds)
Large loop: allow at least 200m (220 yds)

For a double loop, double the m/yds.
