Zinda
Featuring stranded colourwork knitted in the round, with two-colour cables, the geometric patterns in this cosy hat and cowl are inspired by striking tiled architecture in Samarkand, Uzbekistan.

Yarn
The Border Mill North Coast 4-ply, 100% Shetland wool (approx 360m/394yd per 100g):
Gorse (A): Hat 50g Cowl 75g Both 125g*
Loch Maree (B): Hat 50g Cowl 75g Both 100g
* depending on gauge, 100g may be sufficient
Yarn substitution:
The following approximate quantities of a similar fingering weight yarn may be used (quantities may vary depending upon gauge and type of yarn used):
Hat: Yarn A 131m/143yd Yarn B 139m/152yd
Cowl: Yarn A 246m/269yd Yarn B 218m/238yd
Needles and Notions
3.25mm/US 3 (or size required to obtain gauge) circular needle, 40cm/16in length.
Set of DPNs in gauge size for working centre of crown.
2.75mm/US 2 (or two sizes smaller than gauge needle) circular needle, 40cm/16in length.
Spare circular needle two (or more) sizes smaller than gauge needle for picking up hem stitches, 40cm/16in or more in length (optional).
Cable needle (optional).
Small pom-pom maker.
Stitch marker, tapestry needle for finishing, dinner plate & bowl for blocking.
Gauge
Hat
29 sts and 34 rounds to 10cm/4in on larger needles, after wet-blocking, across stranded colourwork at widest part of crown. Gauge immediately above band is 31 sts to 10cm/4in.
Cowl
38 sts and 34 rounds to 10cm/4in on larger needles, after wet-blocking, across stranded colourwork.
Gauge achieved with 3.25mm/US 3 needles. Adjust needle size if necessary to obtain gauge.
Measurements and Sizing
Diameter of hat crown 27cm/11in; band size 53cm/21in to fit head of 55-59cm/21.5-23in circumference. The hat is shown on a 59cm/23in head.
