The annual hot air balloon festival had come to town and Barina could not wait to see all the beautiful balloons. She was also excited to see all the different planes that would zip around the sky making amazing patterns.
The sky had always fascinated Barina. The clouds, the storms, the sun. Barina began thinking, “I’m not the only one!” She remembered a lesson she had a particularly good memory of from her literature class. It was about a proud man named Icarus. You see, Icarus, too, was fascinated by the ability to fly and the sky above. He and his father were to escape their lives in Crete. Icarus’ father created wings made of feathers and wax. They could fly to freedom like the majestic eagles that soared through the sky. Their wings would kiss the clouds with an ever mesmerizing song of flutter. Icarus’ father warned him, though, not to fly too high or too low or the wings would fail. Icarus flew and embraced the freedom of flight! Unfortunately, Icarus did not heed the warning and he plummeted from the sky into the depths of the ocean. He perished because of hubris. He had been warned. Barina often wondered why humans would not listen.
Will Barina discover an answer or shall the marvels and mischievous ways of humans continue to elude her? Come along on another adventure with Barina and find out!
