ABOUT NAARDEN
Many knitters have had this experience: you hold a spectacular piece of colorwork knitting and after admiring the surface, you turn it inside out. You stroke the medley of floats, noting how flat they lie, how neatly they’ve been managed. Yes, you think, this is expertly done. And then, with a knowing smile, you tuck them away again.
Knitters spend a lot of time thinking about floats - the ever-present companions to colorwork. We focus so much on tension and color dominance to make sure that the building blocks of the pattern remain invisible.
But what would happen if the float was allowed to come forward?
Naarden celebrates floats by making them the focal point of the design. The result is a panel of spirals that, like intricate brickwork,, create visual richness through the simple repetition of a well-executed detail. It’s a pleasure to give this rarely-seen but frequently admired aspect of knitting its time to shine. When brought to the front and paired with twisted stitches, they create a texture like richly woven fabric.
