Knitting: Mid-calf Socks
The cables do pull in a lot, and the pattern sucks up a lot of yarn. Consider using a larger cast-on size, or larger needles, and choose a yarn with generous yardage (400 yards might not be enough unless you have small feet).
Knitting: Mid-calf Socks
Please note, this pattern is written only for a cast-on of 71 stitches. It would be easy to make the circumference a bit larger by adding a few knit stitches to the sides of the chart. It will not be easy to knit this on a smaller number of stitches.

This pattern is worked top-down on two circular needles, but double pointed or magic loop could also be used. I used 2.5 mm needles for my sock, but 2.0 - 2.5 could be used, depending on your knitting...
Knitting: Mid-calf Socks

Knitting: Mid-calf Socks
This pattern is written for 60 stitches, but I also included the basic stitch repeat (either 12 or 16 stitches) which will allow for cast-ons of either 60, 64, 72 or 80 stitches. The different stitch counts can be easily substituted in the charts given.
Knitting: Mid-calf Socks
Warning: The cables on this pattern make it REALLY snug. Pretty much all of my testers had to start over with a larger number of stitches. A cast-on of 76 or 80 stitches would not be unreasonable for a larger foot/ankle.
Knitting: Mid-calf Socks
Pattern is written for 68 stitches and will not be easily adapted to a smaller cast-on, but it pulls in quite a bit and I think should comfortably fit a smaller foot/ankle.
