Bagamoyo is an old Swahili coastal town about an hour’s drive from Dar es Salaam in Tanzania. These days it’s pretty chill but the architecture harkens back to a time when it was the bustling major port city on the mainland. Most of the work on this pattern was done while stuck in Dar traffic dreaming of a lazy weekend away wandering around Old...

Knitting: Shawl / Wrap
This asymmetrical sideways triangle shawl’s name comes from its shape. Pembetatu is the Swahili word for triangle. It features a textured oval motif cut into garter stitch. The juxtaposition of motifs and texture is one of the things I love about Swahili woodwork.

Mjohoro, Mhoba, Flamboyant, and the Tanzanian Christmas Tree are all names given to a tree that flowers spectacularly in December. It’s so striking that it is sometimes used as a motif in woodcarvings like those that can be found on massive doors on the island of Zanzibar and along the Swahili Coast.

My grandmother Marguerite was a classy, refined, impeccably dressed woman and a Marine in WWII! All class with lots of grit and gumption and my niece Clemmie is a spitting image of her. I had them in mind when I designed “The New Kid” cardigan as it is one that I envision my grandmother slipping over her children as their “go to” cardigan.

Knitting: Baby Blanket
This blanket takes its name from the geometric columns of rock that trail out into the North Atlantic in Northern Ireland. It is knit using a combination of cables and mock cabling to cut down on the time involved without taking away from an all-over cabled look or its mimicry of the rock formation itself.
