Knitting: Mid-calf Socks
These socks were born because I wanted some warm and cosy socks for my husband to wear in his work boots. He is out in all weathers driving across to the Isle of Skye and his route takes him alongside the River Carron (Abhainn Carrann in Gaelic) after which these socks are named. He regularly sees deer in this area so whether the main cable pat...

I designed this cowl to help raise awareness and funds for Papyrus UK, the national charity for the prevention of young suicide. I chose a star design to remind the wearer that even in the darkest night the stars are still shining brightly above the clouds, we may not be able to see them, but they are still there.

Named in memory of my nephew Adam, all profits from the sale of this pattern will go to the national suicide prevention charity Papyrus https://www.papyrus-uk.org/
Knitting: Mid-calf Socks
This pattern was born because I wanted little cable hearts for my Mother for her Mother’s Day socks this year. I also wanted a stretchy sock that would fit well using a sock yarn that contained 30% cotton.

This little square has been evolving on my hook for a couple of years now. So far I have used it to make a cushion cover, a baby blanket, and a granny square jacket; in fact it has become my “go to” for whenever I want a small flower square for a project. I decided to write it up and share it with you before I start playing with making it into ...

With the start of the baseball season, we know summer is on its way, but it can be cold at those early games (and at the other end of the season too) so how about the perfect socks to keep your feet warm?! Written for a range of sizes you can knit them for all your family and friends. Use green and white for generic baseball socks or pick your ...

Since early childhood I have loved rabbits, so it was inevitable that I would create other projects with these motifs from my Chocolate Bunny Socks. Of course, your bunnies don’t have to be chocolate, this is a great design to be creative and have fun experimenting with colors!

Some years ago, friends from the US were spending Christmas with us and I wanted to equip them with warm hats for all their sightseeing adventures. I was looking for something that had a flavor of Scotland without screaming “Tourist!!!” and which also had a small difference between hats so they could easily tell them apart. I decided to try my ...

These socks were born at the start of the pandemic and have been patiently waiting for me to write them up! March 2020 was a scary time; our world changed rapidly, and no one really knew what the future held. As events unfolded, I found these Bible verses repeating over and over in my brain:

The Dala horse (or Dalahäst in Swedish) is a traditional carved and painted wooden horse that has become a symbol of Sweden and of Swedish handcrafts. The man credited with introducing the painting technique still used today also emigrated to the American Midwest around the same time as my ancestor. I designed these socks in honor of my cousin ...

The fourth of my Celtic Dragon sock designs, Draig Clymwaith means “knotwork dragon” in Welsh. The first two designs in this series contained dragons and knotwork in separate sections of the design. For the third design (Dragain Ceangailte) the dragons were joined together and emerged from the knotwork.

Earraich means “Spring” in Scottish Gaelic, a time of renewal and rebirth symbolised in this design by Celtic knotwork. As the dark, grey days of winter give way to spring, bright crocuses of purple and gold appear in the freshly growing grass. The colours I chose for this project reflect these harbingers of light and warmth.

Sometimes a particular ball of yarn catches your eye, and you know you need it even if you have no idea what you’re going to make with it. This design started like that. I saw the Candy colorway of Rico Twirl and was instantly smitten. I resisted buying it for months, until one day I saw it on sale and that was that. A few days later I had the ...

Pointed arches, ribbed vaults, stained glass, ornate tracery are all found in the Gothic buildings built from the mid-12th to the 16th century. I was lucky to grow up in a family of history lovers who often decided a rainy day meant a trip to one of these spectacular cathedrals or castles. These socks are not based on any one place but remind m...

I designed these socks because I wanted to use some pretty sock yarn containing 30% cotton. Cotton is not as elastic as fibers such as wool and tends to stretch out over time, so I decided to play with some cable patterns to help counteract this. Cables pull the knitted fabric in widthwise, so they work against the cottons’ natural tendency to ...

Have you heard the expression “a lazy wind”? It refers to when it feels like the wind goes right through you instead of blowing around you (hence it being lazy!). I designed this cowl for just such a day. It is knit at a tighter tension than the one given on the yarn label to result in a denser, more wind resistant fabric to combat cold winter ...

Once you have knit a few pairs of socks you will inevitably end up with some leftover sock yarn. Often the colorway has been discontinued by the time you actually get round to knitting with it (!) so how can you use it up? I created these socks to remind me of a place that has a very special place in my heart, the Moray Firth. When my children were young we had a caravan in one of the small villages along this coastline and, from March to October, we spent a lot of time there. All the motifs on this sock are inspired by this area, from the seagulls and sailboats ...

Mystical and otherworldly the Northern Lights have captured our imagination down through the centuries. I hope knitting these mitts will remind you of the beautiful, strange, and vast universe just above our heads, and, if you have been lucky enough to see the northern lights in person, I hope they will remind you of that experience.

I grew up in a household where my grandmother knitted and my mother sewed, there were regular trips to buy yarn and fabric, so it was inevitable I ended up with a passion for both! From early childhood I have loved owls, so when we found shortly after moving in here that we have tawny owls living close by I was delighted! Twisted cable ribbing representing the ropes of the longships sits above a knotwork motif representing shields and oars. Thorfinn Tonttu stands at the water’s edge waiting to embark on his adventure while noisy gulls circle the skies above the longships.
