Herdwick sheep are renowned for their character, stubbornness and ability to survive above the treeline in Cumbria. Their origins are shrouded in mystery and they are unlike other British breeds. They are born black and are dark brown at a year old, fading to a mixed grey/white by the time they are fully grown. Although the fleeces are coarse and the yarn is therefore pretty firm in texture, it has the most wonderful depth of natural colour so dyes beautifully and is great for accessories and household items.
