Mongolian sheep are a breed of domestic sheep native to the Mongolian plateau in Asia. The scientific name is Ovis aries, where Ovis is the generic name for sheep and Aries is the species name, which means “ram” in Latin. Mongolian sheep are known for their high-quality wool, which is soft, durable, and warm. The wool fibers of Mongolian sheep are generally finer and softer than those of many other sheep breeds. The fibers are 15 to 25 microns in diameter and are also elastic, meaning they can stretch and return to their original shape. This is a desirable property as it allows for greater durability and resistance to pilling. Mongolian sheep have a double coat of wool, with a fine, soft undercoat and a longer, coarser outer coat. The wool from the top coat is mostly used to make coarser textiles such as blankets and carpets, while the wool from the undercoat is used to make finer textiles such as clothing. Mongolian sheep are well adapted to the harsh and cold climate of the Mongolian plateau, and their wool helps them stay warm in extreme temperatures. The wool fibers also have a natural water-repellent property that protects the sheep from the elements. In addition to being used in textiles, Mongolian sheep’s wool is also used to make felt, a nonwoven fabric made by felting, compacting and pressing fibers. This is possible due to the high tensile strength of the fibers, i.e. they can withstand great tension without breaking.
