1916 Utopia Plaid Afghan
Here’s a one-color plaid in knit and purl only! From Utopia Yarn Book in 1916, this rare pattern can be the entire afghan or used as a wide afghan stripe. There are 20 pattern rows but most of the rows are duplicates of other rows and are quick to learn. The pattern is multiples of 17 stitches + 7 additional stitches. The texture makes a snugly, reversible afghan and will show best in a light-colored thread or yarn. Blocking can be skipped if you like extra texture.
Skills needed: cast-on, knit, purl, and bind-off in knit and purl stitch.
Gauge is not important in this pattern. Any thread/yarn and any size needles will work.
Make a swatch to check the look and width of your work.
15 yards of Ultra Pima will make about 9 rows (1 inch) with a 41-stitch width strip at 8 sts/inch and 8 rows/inch.
