Simple knits and purls combine to create stripes that seem to morph in front of your eyes with a technique variously called “shadow” or “illusion” knitting. Knit here in a classic black and tan combination, consider pairing a bright colour with a neutral, or a solid colour with a variegated yarn. Strong contrast will enhance the effect. As it is knit from the bottom up, you can easily control how large your cowl will be; the width at the top of the triangle you are knitting becomes the circumference of the cowl that fits around your neck, and you can knit the straight, cowl portion as tall as you want.

This is an easy project. The techniques you will need to know, or learn, to complete the project are:

  • cast on and bind off;
  • knit and purl:
  • m1L and m1R increases;
  • mattress stitch or other seaming technique.
