This shawl was knit with yarn from Box #3 of the Beyond Merino Yarn Club, a collaboration between Sweet Paprika Designs and The Small Bird Workshop . The wool comes from Cormo sheep raised on the Falkland Islands; the gold colour was dyed by Sweet Paprika Designs, and the grey is natural, undyed wool. Since this was a limited-edition yarn, available only to Yarn Club subscribers, I have suggested using Sweet Paprika’s “Molto Crescendo” yarn, a bouncy, 4-ply fingering weight yarn. The yellow is brighter and the grey is darker, but it would still be an attractive “grellow” pairing.

The shawl is a traditional top-down triangle that begins with a garter tab and grows with four increases on every right-side row—one inside each outer border, and one on each side of the spine stitch. The simple 6-stitch, 6-row stitch pattern is staggered in the first, golden, section; then the same motif is stacked when working the stripes. The eyelet-striped border grows naturally out of the main motif, and the optional picots on the bind-off emphasize those eyelet stripes.

This is an intermediate project. The skills you will need to know, or learn, are:

  • garter tab cast-on (instructions in pattern);
  • knit and purl;
  • yo increase;
  • k2tog decrease;
  • ssk decrease;
  • cdd double decrease;
  • lace bind-off (instructions in pattern).
