When I was young, I lived for my daytimer. I would write everything down in it like it was a diary of my life. If there was a blank day, I would anxiously find things to write down in it, to make sure that no day was left blank, or void, of productive things.

One day in high school,, my daytimer went missing. And I completely lost my mind.

After literally dumping my entire locker on the floor looking for it, my best friend (who also happens to be the model for this garment set), handed it over, with a smirk and a solid piece of advice. “Sam,” she said, one eyebrow arched with concern. “You need to calm down a bit and let life happen, the way it’s going to happen. No matter how hard you try to force the path you think you want, life will take you down whatever path you’re meant to be on. All the randomness that is bound to happen, will get you where you’re suppose to go. Living your life like this -“ she paused, pointing at the daytimer and looking around at the mess on the floor - “isn’t healthy and it’s not going to force the outcome to be any different. Life is a sequence of events, opportunities, adventures and misadventures. It is somewhat random and somewhat planned. We make decisions and choices and hope for the best outcome. But documenting it like it’s something that you can map and force… it’s going to lead you to a state of unhappiness.”

Of course, I didn’t listen … not right away, anyway.

Many years later, I found her to be right. I lost complete control of my life. After years and years of careful and meticulous planning, all hell broke loose. And for the next five years, there was no way to control anything that was happening around me. The chaos came at me like debris in a storm. Nothing was predictable and no matter how hard I planned, everything backfired.

Finally, I gave up. Not on life… but on CONTROLLING life. I started to let life be what it was meant to be. I started handling each chaotic episode as a unique thing, and each day I slammed my head against a wall wondering what this all meant.

In 2019, the answer became clear when I finally turned around and saw the break in the storm and the rays of sunshine flowing to the earths surface. Suddenly, all the chaos and the random and the forced paths life put me on, made sense. Sitting right there in front of me, was my reason.

This hat and infinity scarf set, strategically modelled by my best friend who was the first voice of reason in all of this, is completely designed to represent the chaos that has been my life, and the beautiful outcome it can produce. A cozy knit made of bulky yarn, designer to keep you protected from the elements and brave the storm.

Happy knitting. :-)
